Welcome to my Waldorf homeschool blog!

My journey into waldorf homeschooling

I am Mariam, a State and Waldorf trained teacher based in London. I quit school teaching to homeschool my boys and now I am sharing my knowledge and experience through this Waldorf (ish) homeschool blog.

My teaching journey began in 2009 after I graduated from the University of York, with a Bsc Honours in Economics and Finance.

Following a year of teaching Economics abroad at a British International school, I decided to return to the UK to complete my PGCE in mathematics at Kingston University. It is hard to believe that I have now been teaching for 17 years but I am so grateful for the diverse experiences and opportunities my career has given me.

Over the years

During my teaching career, I have taught mathematics at primary and secondary levels. My State qualification is in secondary maths, but in 2017 I also completed a Singapore Math training course suited to primary teaching. Singapore Maths was a popular approach in UK primary schools at the time and while it's not as widely used now, I'm still a fan of their workbooks for structured maths practice.

In 2018, I began a Waldorf teacher training course whilst also teaching maths at my local Waldorf school. At school, I was part of an Ofsted inspection and the Head received excellent feedback for my lesson. Following on from this, I began mentoring other teachers and ran mathematics training sessions for teachers at the school.

Fast Forward to Present Day

After a very successful mathematics teaching career, I decided to put my career on hold. I did this, as I decided to homeschool my own child (I only had one at the time). In our homeschool, I cover a wide range of subjects while taking a thematic approach to learning. I believe in the Waldorf understanding of the stages of development, which also fit in with my Islamic beliefs, and I also value the curriculum guidance inspired by Steiner. However, I do not follow the Western Waldorf curriculum rigidly, instead, I adapt it to suit our family's needs, values and interests. My Waldorf inspired Urdu resources such as these flashcards and Islamic resources which you can find on my Waldorf Homeschool Blog, have been creatively designed and are unique, Out of the core subjects, English and Maths, you will mostly find maths resources and posts on my website, as that's my area of specialism.
